What is online counselling?

Online counselling is a session with a psychologist by video or by phone, instead of in our office. Synthesis Psychology offers online and telephone counselling across Alberta.

Sessions are 50 minutes, the same as in person, and you start the same way: with a free 15-minute phone consultation, so we can understand what you're looking for and match you with the right psychologist.

Why online

Counselling that fits around your life

  • No commute

Skip the drive and parking downtown, and fit a session into a lunch break or the end of your day.

  • Wherever you are in Alberta

See a Calgary psychologist from anywhere in the province, without the trip into the city.

  • Video or phone

Meet your psychologist by video, or by phone if you'd rather not be on camera.

  • 50-minute sessions

The same length as in-person sessions, with time at the end for next steps and booking.

  • Private and confidential

The same confidentiality applies online as in the office.

  • The same matching

Your consultation call matches you with a psychologist for what you're facing, and you can ask then about meeting online or by phone.

Before you start

Where you need to be

Our psychologists are registered to practice in Alberta, and professional regulations vary by province and territory. For this reason, our online and phone counselling services are available to clients who are physically located in Alberta during their sessions.

Let us know on your consultation call where you'll be located for your appointments so we can ensure we're best able to support you.

Getting ready for an online session

  • A private, quiet space where you won't be overheard
  • A device with a camera and a steady internet connection, or a phone for phone sessions
  • Headphones, if other people are nearby
  • A few minutes before the session to settle in
  • Water, tissues, or anything else that helps you feel comfortable

How getting started works

  1. Reach out

Call 403.261.5085 or send us a message. We answer calls and email Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, and aim to get back to you as soon as we can.

  2. Talk for 15 minutes

A free phone consultation to understand what you're looking for, so you find the psychologist best suited to your needs.

  3. Start with the right psychologist

We connect you with a psychologist who has the training and experience for what you're facing, and who is a good fit for you. If we don't offer the support you need, we'll refer you to specialized resources.

Questions about online counselling

Can I have sessions by phone instead of video?

Yes. As well as online video sessions, we offer counselling by telephone.

Is online counselling different from counselling in person?

The session itself works the same way: 50 minutes with your psychologist, shaped around what you want to work on. Some people prefer the comfort of home; others prefer the office. You can talk it through on your consultation call.

Are online sessions covered by benefit plans?

Many extended health benefit plans cover sessions with a psychologist. Check whether your plan covers virtual sessions before you book. See fees and insurance.

Can I keep seeing my psychologist online if I'm travelling or move away?

It depends on where you'll be. Psychologists are regulated where the client is located, so seeing a client outside Alberta can require registration in that province or territory. Talk to your psychologist before you go.

What happens on the free 15-minute consultation?

It's a short, free phone call to talk about what's bringing you in and what you're looking for, so we can match you with the psychologist best suited to your needs. Book a consultation or call 403.261.5085.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Psychologists follow a code of ethics with strict confidentiality rules that protect your privacy, with limits only in exceptional circumstances, as set out by the College of Alberta Psychologists.

If you claim sessions through a benefit plan, the specific reason you're seeing a psychologist stays confidential.
