Biography

NOTE: Dr. Michael Sorsdahl is based in British Columbia, and sees clients primarily online.

Michael specializes in crisis and trauma issues (PTSD), LGBTQ2I+ issues, men’s issues, and complex life transitions in all forms. Based in an experiential form of therapy, he utilizes an integrated approach that combines the principles of a ‘here and now’ focus to therapy (Gestalt), while building a safe therapeutic environment (person-centered), and exploring the underlying meaning for clients (existential) to find the best collaborated path to achieve the client’s goals. Interventions may also include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and practical strategies, EMDR (level 1 and 2 trained), and therapeutic enactment as needed.

Michael completed his Masters in Counselling Psychology at the University of Victoria which is what his registration as a psychologist is based on. He completed his Ph.D from the University of British Columbia at the Centre for Cross Faculty Inquiry in Education, focused on Counselling Education (not a doctorate in psychology). He is currently a a sessional instructor for Counselling Psychology at the University of Victoria and an adjunct professor for the University of British Columbia. He has over 16 years of experience in both group and individual counselling/psychotherapy and served 25 years of service with the Royal Canadian Navy as a Senior Naval Reserve Officer (CD). He is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists and with the College of Psychologists of BC, and focuses his vast and diverse knowledge and experience to help individuals of all walks of life overcome mental health challenges and sees clients in person in Victoria, while providing online services through videoconferencing for those throughout BC.

Michael comes from a diverse background of experience that includes his 25 years of military service and his work as an educator/instructor in multiple educational institutions. He is a lover of music through singing, piano and dance; and a lover of animals with 2 Boston Terriers and a ginger-cat that he shares with his partner and 2 daughters.
